It goes without saying that people are critical to success in any industry. But if you wanted to create an ideal tech ‘dream team’, what would it actually look like? To gain the insights, we asked our network of global industry leaders for their advice on the matter. Here’s what they had to say…
What does a dream team look like?
For Tony Loran, Head of RPA at Element Materials, an ideal dream team begins with two developers, one business analyst, one solution architect, and one programme lead or head of automation. Once automations are delivered regularly, automation controllers should be onboarded and, if possible, the number of business analysts and developers increased.
An important point that Tony noted is that this will need to change as the automation initiative matures, and we couldn’t agree more.
Nikki North, RPA Lead at Thames Water had a similar view. She stated that a centre of excellence who can provide the vision, and drive the automation agenda across the business, is key. Also needed is a skilled architect with technical consultancy, support, and guidance experience. But this won’t be the case for every business.
Is there such a thing?
Jason Cripps, Global Head of Intelligent Automation & Operational Excellence at Zurich Insurance, believes there’s no single answer. In our discussions, he pointed out that it all depends on what you’re trying to scale for and industrialise. And he’s not alone in thinking this.
Rod Chadwich, Continuous Improvement Lead at Euromoney Institutional Investor PLC, had a similar opinion: “I’m not sure there is a single dream team structure. The important thing is to ensure you continue to review your structure, as it will need to change as you progress. The team at the start, compared to when you get to scale, will need to be different. The main thing is to remain cognisant of that and adapt as required.”
What about values?
One thing to consider when scaling your business is that it isn’t always about the roles within the team. Rather, it’s about the values and experience people can bring to them. Laura Robertson, Global Head of Process Automation Practice at First Derivatives, agreed, noting that it’s important to put trust, courage, and respect at the top of the pyramid.
She said: “It’s not just people, it’s the values they imbue. Set up a true digital transformation team for a client – not just business analysts, but experts that come armed with best practices from years of experience and RPA war wounds.”
